    About our instructors:

    Thomas (he/him, fet: untiedbythomas)

Thomas joined Studio Friction and the Denver Kink community in April of 2022 and has been obsessed ever since. A rope top and self suspender, Thomas has a deep love for all things Shibari, whether that be taking every class possible, learning a new harness for suspensions, or compulsively shopping for new rope. He believes no scene is finished until the last bit of rope is removed, putting extra emphasis on connection, body movement, and intimacy. Recently stepping into the world of teaching, he is so excited to give back to the community that has taught him so much and share all of the education he has absorbed along the way.

Within the kink world, Thomas' interests include: grappling/wrestling, D/S dynamics, CNC play, and is willing to try anything at least 4 times. Outside of kink, Thomas can be found playing guitar, reading, training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, playing board games, walking his 2 dogs, and writing code. Thomas identifies as a cis, poly, het, white male and is constantly curious about human experiences different than his own.

    Marilyn (she/her, fet: _Marilyn_)

Marilyn first entered the Denver rope community in 2019. After finishing the partnered curriculum in March 2020 (literally the Wednesday before Denver shut down!), Marilyn began self-tying as a way to maintain her rope skills. She quickly fell in love with the playful, energetic, and dynamic nature of it! She is happy to be back in Denver and to be exploring all that rope has to offer again, whether that's tying others, tying herself, or letting others tie her sometimes too.

Marilyn identifies as a queer, polyamorous, kinky switch. She's passionate about relationship anarchy, arguing the semantics of language, and the value of building connections. She's excited to be engaging with the Denver rope community in a new, bigger way through teaching and curriculum development.

Sam Jay & Zero Gi DISCLAIMERS

          • We are not licensed instructors of anything here.
          • Some things we've picked up from others, but these are our own interpretations
          • Other things are our own Inventions

          About the Instructors:

Sam Jay he/him, Zero Gi she/her

Zero-Gi and Sam Jay are best known for their NYC Street Shibari project and for their without-a-net high-altitude urbex suspensions, which gives them a unique perspective on suspension safety and dynamics. Around NYC, they are known for their speed, performing at Torture Garden and local burlesque/circus/aerial venues with suspension routines in under 10 minutes. They’ve been teaching and performing together since 2020, including internationally, but the dirty secret is that it’s really all just about the hot ties at home.

Before joining forces in 2018, Sam Jay picked up strong fundamentals from 2011 to 2017 in the Osada-ryu-based Melbourne Rope Dojo, where he was one of the first five students. In 2017, he decided to tie partners rather than to tie styles, and that has made all the difference. Zero-Gi caught the rope bug in 2017, and while she owes a great deal to her rich education in a broad diversity of styles from tops, bottoms, switches, and self-suspenders worldwide, she has always rooted her core practice in dedicated solo study, challenging assumptions, interrogating standard forms, and eventually developing and crash testing new ties on her own body first. Together, Sam Jay and Zero-Gi have continually pushed the envelope on a global stage, from single toe suspensions and death-defying heights to popular new ties, techniques, signature transition sequences, inclusive adaptations, and dogma-ditching expansion of the standard rope repertoire.

          Important Registration Information:

                  Flirting with Danger

Dynamic Suspension Transition Sequences with Sam Jay and Zero-Gi

                  price per tying pair:

                  BOUND Members $380 |TIED Members $390 | WRAPPED Members $400

                  Session 1: Saturday May 10th, 10AM to 4PM

                  Session 2: Sunday May 11th, 10AM to 4PM

Danger is the stuff of action movies and romance novels. Danger is also a palpable presence in BDSM and rope suspension, whether explicit or implicit. Here, we give you the tools to navigate and play with danger in a consent-informed and thoughtful way. By directly confronting the danger inherent in rope suspension, we show how this allows you to break free from stale shibari tropes and develop your own unique collaborative style. Throughout the weekend, we provide an example of one such style, co-developed by our mutual interests and preferences, steeped in traditional elements and blended with modern tying innovations to create dynamic and exciting tying experiences.

Our appetite to experience danger but also to manage that danger has led to the development of a number of unique ties: our Thighbinder, Thigh High, and Zero-Gravity Slipper. These ties are not merely about the color-by-numbers pattern. Instead, they are taught from the context of having been rigorously tested in a rich diversity of situations, materials, and bodies. These ties are demonstrated in context with extant alternatives so attendees can evaluate best cases for each.

We then put these ties to work in custom transition sequences for which they are best suited. Two of our most iconic signature dynamic suspension transition sequences feature transitions for stunning drops to flip, roll, twist, swing, and spin safely in style, with body mechanics and adaptations for high-impact top and bottom-led transitions.

Our teaching style heavily emphasizes technical skills on all sides of rope, and key soft skills. Within these technical skills we further focus on elements that we feel are missing in the wider rope education curriculum and on adaptations for diverse bodies. As for soft skills, we share our own but we largely focus on interactions and leave the interpretation of “connection” for the attendees. Finally, we teach skills that will allow you to escape the trap of technical perfection and the endless labbing it promotes.

                  Things to bring:

                  • Your favorite swivel and rigging plate, ring, and/or carabiner system
                  • Standard suspension rope kit, ideally with POSH or Hempex for uplines and natural fiber ropes for body ties. Slippery synthetics will be more challenging to work with, and jute uplines will increase upline failure risk
                  • Water bottles, notepads/pencils, blankets, meds, snacks, or anything else you or your partner need
                  • It is possible but challenging to suspend our custom leg ties successfully with nylon rope and/or slippery leggings, however it may take more time and practice to achieve that. Easiest will be natural fiber rope against bare skin for less hairy legs and non-slippery pants or high socks for more hairy legs (unless you like your glorious mane of leg hairs being pulled out by rope—people being tied, you have been warned!)

                  Prerequisites:

Please ask the organizers if you or your tying partner have any concerns or questions about any of the following pre-reqs or required materials and we will let you know if we can safely and effectively accommodate or adapt!

                    For everyone
                    • Hardpoint and equipment evaluation and risk awareness

                    • Bondage risk awareness and anatomy/body mechanics in rope suspension

                    • Multiple transitions in suspension including upright and inverted

                    • Multiple sustainable upper body harnesses for suspension

                    • Following instructions and asking for help while suspending, both from instructors and partners

                      If tying

                      • Managing and handling multiple uplines in suspension

                      • Secure, fast lockoffs for suspension

                      • Rope and body handling on the ground and in the air

                      • Tying and loading non-collapsing suspendable single columns and harnesses quickly and securely with consistent and accurate tension and placement

                      • Making all adaptations required for your tying partner

                      If being tied

                      • Tying at least one form of non-collapsing single column tie

                      • Sustaining and communicating effectively through extended inversions and backbends with your partner

                      • Communicating adaptations and adjustments for your body in suspension

                      • Sustaining single point suspension from a front-loaded hip harness or waist rope with your tying partner

                      Recommended/Will benefit from (all)

                      • Experience safely using or adapting gote/box ties through suspension transitions

                      • Experience safely inverting from ankle or foot ties

                      • Experience navigating both dynamic and static transition sequences

                      • Experience learning with your tying partner

This duality reminds us as we navigate a world that is rarely black and white
; stark contrasts and subtle nuances coexist in a delicate balance, similar to a Mobius strip.

Join us for a night of play where guests are encouraged to delve deeper into the complexities of extremes! Distill chaos into clarity through the masterful simplicity of scenes. Push boundaries, challenge perceptions, and confront the uncomfortable through minimalism.

                                with Kit Amethyst

                                Class Description:

                                BDSM as Neurodivergent Liberation

Nick Walker, author of Neuroqueer Heresies (2014) defines neurodivergence as “having a mind that functions in ways which diverge significantly from the dominant societal standards of “normal.”” While in recent years, the label of neurodivergent is often, and somewhat falsely, been used as a catch-all term to describe ADHDers and Autists, this identity exists to be claimed by anyone who seeks to name, recognize, and own their unique ways of being in the world and the norms that have harm us all (neurodivergent and neuro“typical” alike).

For many kinksters and BDSM practitioners, our identity as an erotic minority already marks us as outside the “norm” despite research that indicates the high prevalence (45–60%) of BDSM fantasies within the population, even if those who claim the identity of “kinky” is a much lower percentage  (Dunkley & Brotto, 2018; De Neef et al., 2019). Like being neurodivergent, to be kinky, is to claim and own our own experiences and desires as different from the expectations and demands of a larger dominant culture.

It is perhaps not surprising then, that many kinksters are multiply neurodivergent. We are queer, gender non-conforming, trans, non-monogamous, plural, trauma survivors, chronically ill, and/or disabled. We struggle with our mental health, have been diagnosed with personality disorders, pathologized, or labeled as manipulative, noncompliant, or psychotic. Some of us are PoGM because neurotypicality has always been rooted in white supremacy.

This presentation asks not only why so many neurodivergent individuals are drawn to kink, but also how BDSM uniquely supports our liberation and authentic truths.

Studio Friction's newest comedy show is hosted by our very own Chris Wellman. Chris is a kink & sex positive comedian who hosts both the Comedy & Kink and The Slut Down comedy shows in Denver.

The Knotty Show is part stand-up comedy show, part rope demonstration. Colorado's goofiest comedians perform their craft alongside a couple of kinksters doing a suspension. Sometimes the comics roll with it and sometimes the comics get all blushy & bashful. Either way, hilarity ensues!

                                          Rope treating and care

                                          with switchtext

                                          Cost per individual: Bound: Free | Tied: $10 | Wrapped: $15|Non-Member: $20

                                          Class Description:

So you have new, untreated natural fiber rope.... And it’s pretty scratchy. Well let’s fix that. Unless you like it scratchy.. (Which some people do?)

We are going to show you how we treat new jute rope specifically, but some of these techniques apply to hemp as well. Some of you may have purchased some great rope recently from My Nawashi (great stuff by some good friends of ours in Dallas) We have a lot of their rope, and we have made it with them in their studio. Untreated rope can be significantly less expensive than rope treated for bondage, because as you will learn, there it a lot that can go into well treated rope. But many people love finding a deeper connection with your rope through treating and maintaining it yourself.

This class will cover how we break/polish, singe/burn off, wax and bake our rope to make it more soft, useable, and sensual. This can be done to your own taste. If there is time we will also cover whipping, knotting and other rope end options. We will also cover how to maintain your rope over time, which includes waxing, burning, oiling and other ways to keep your rope in good shape. We will not cover how to spin rope from twine, though we would love to in a future class. You are welcome to follow along with your rope, and we can help with any questions you might have along the way.

If you would like to share your own technique with the class that would be great too - anyone experienced in making / treating / maintaining rope will be welcome to share their techniques.

The first hour of class will be a presentation and demonstration of the techniques, and the remainder of the time will be to treat your kit, with help along the way from Switchtext.

6mm, 8m, partially MyNawashi rope will be available for sale at $20/hank

                                          What to bring:

                                          • Rope to discuss, evaluate, and practice with
                                          • Work gloves if you have them
                                          • Clothes that you don’t mind having lots of rope fiber on
                                          • A carabiner or two
                                          • Jojoba oil, mineral oil, beeswax if you have them
                                          • Rags / old towel
                                          • Pliers
                                          • Camp stove with fuel if you have one, as this will allow more people to get their rope burned off
                                          • Scissors

                                          About the Instructor:

TNG is great for those new and experienced with rope alike. It’s a safe space to try out rope for the first time while also building community among the next generation. Skill sharing is encouraged from experienced riggers. And of course, non-rope activities are allowed too.

                                                Schedule:

                                                • From 7:30-8pm there will be casual instruction on a basic knot and safety.
                                                • Pending the availability of experienced riggers, there may be an opportunity for rope tastings throughout the night.
                                                • Arrive by 8pm to allow our volunteers time to socialize/play too!

TNG is especially good for people new to Studio Friction as it’s one of our few regular monthly events that is open to non-members.

Rope Practicum is a friendly and collaborative space where rope enthusiasts come together to share, learn, and grow in their practice. Whether you’re a top, bottom, switch, or self-tier, this community-driven event offers a chance to ask questions, troubleshoot techniques, exchange skills, and dive into meaningful discussions about rope bondage. Our goal is to create a welcoming environment where everyone—newbies and seasoned practitioners alike—can expand their knowledge and refine their craft through open-source, community-led learning.

Please note, Rope Practicum is not a play space. While playfulness is welcome, this is a space focused on learning and discussion, not on scenes or play. To keep the atmosphere conducive to education, studio lights will remain on, and music will be off.

This isn’t a traditional class, nor do we operate within a teacher-student hierarchy. We encourage everyone to contribute, whether you’re offering your expertise or exploring new ideas. Our inclusive approach means that all are welcome, regardless of experience level or role within rope dynamics.

                                                      Instructors:

                                                      Kathryn/shorty_kat (she/her)

Kathryn has been a member of the Denver rope community since 2021. Initially captivated by Shibari’s blend of beauty and pain, she has fallen in love with the technical depth and artistry rope offers. She began her journey as a bottom, with a fondness for Futomomo inversions. In 2022, Kathryn decided to delve deeper into Shibari by learning to tie. Since then, she has dedicated herself to honing her skills as a rigger through meticulous attention to detail. Kathryn has a love for flowy, sensual, sweet ties with a dash of meanness sprinkled on top for spice.

                                                      Oso (he/him)

Oso has been a part of the denver rope community since early 2022. Originally intrigued by the shapes he saw, Oso fell in love with the intimacy, challenge, risk, and connection associated with Shibari. Oso identifies as a switch but still has a strong passion for bottoming. He loves challenging ties with single point hangs, pain, and twisty torsions. Through rope and self expression, Oso believes that everyone has the opportunity to create something beautiful and cultivate community growth.

                                                        Description:

This course builds on the first 2 beginner courses and is the first in the intermediate level. During these four weeks, we will refine the structure and tension of our chest harnesses for suspension, gain an understanding of load line mechanics and safety, tie a mermaid harness that can be suspended, learn about directional suspensions including side, face-up, and face down, and ultimately tie a static suspension.

                                                          Requirements:

Working knowledge of the three rope gote (TK), basic negotiation skills, 6-10 - 30' lengths of rope, 3-5 load rated carabiners, or a suspension ring.

                                                          About our instructors:

                                                          TheDude (he/him)

TheDude has been tying for... a long time. Thanks to the opportunities provided by Denver Rope Bite and Studio Friction's efforts, he has had some amazing opportunities to learn from presenters around the globe. Pre-Covid he could often be found at parties and events having fun scenes, teaching and occasionally performing. These days he is focusing on play at home but still trying to build community through smaller, more focused, educational opportunities..

                                                          BetwixtBlushes (she/her)

BetwixtBlushes is a regular in the Denver scene since 2015. She is an enthusiast of discussion groups, bottoms speaking up (especially in class), and thigh high socks. If you hear giggling, she's often the culprit.

                                                            Kennedy Be Mine (they/them, she/her)

Kennedy is queer, kinky and an avid self-suspender! Kennedy took her first rope class at studio friction in 2022 and has been tying ever since. They especially enjoy blending nerdy cosplay with shibari and loves the way rope can make every, body feel amazing.

Tight Lines: A kink life drawing event

                                                              COST: Sliding scale $10/$15/$20

Please bring your favorite drawing materials; we will be drawing the human form in an array of kinky activities. Obviously, there will be a strong focus on rope, and we will likely start there, but eventually, there will be a range of kinks represented. We will create a relaxed atmosphere to see and draw fun, sexy things.

If you are new to rope or kink, this will be a great low-pressure atmosphere to spend some time watching and drawing some beautiful kink. Models will pose for varying times in various kinds of positions.

If you don't have them, we will provide some basic materials, but certainly, bring your favorite sketchbook/tablet/easel and mark-making supplies.

Switchtext isn’t an art instructor, but he does have an art degree and has spent a lot of time in life drawing classes. He is happy to offer input and suggestions on your work if you would like.

If you are interested in posing and tying for these drawing sessions, reach out to nate@studiofriction.com

                                                                  Class Description:

In this class, students will learn how to suspend from large pieces of bamboo. Set up for the bamboo as well as safety and practical considerations will be covered. Then students will be shown positions and techniques that will allow them to explore the options, challenges, and sick rigger cred that come with this style of suspension.

In this class, Shosty and BetwixtBlushes will walk through the basics of tying to overhead bamboo as a hard point, instead of a traditional single point. They will start from rigging the bamboo and proceed all the way to suspension exercises.

Bamboo is different and nuanced, especially when so many of us are used to tying on single points. These differences will be discussed, as well as safety considerations.

Following this discussion, Shosty and BetwixtBlushes will lead class participants in setting up their bamboo and instructing a tie off that is designed more specifically for bamboo suspension. Following this, two suspensions will be demonstrated that highlight some of the differences between tying to bamboo vs. a single point.

The first will be a partial suspension that will allow for use of the newly instructed tie off, as well as give the rigger an opportunity to discover some of the differences of tying on bamboo. It will also give the person being tied an opportunity to experience the different sensations of a bamboo suspension.

The second suspension will be a full suspension that will give the rigger the chance to play with different body positions on the bamboo, and more practice with tie offs. The person being tied will be able to experience the different ways a bamboo suspension affects their body, and will give them the opportunity to experiment with micro adjustments with their body to better manage these types of suspension.

Throughout this class, BetwixtBlushes will offer valuable information for persons being tied in respect to bamboo suspensions, including how to manage breathing, the different body sensations of a bamboo suspension, and other bottoming-related topics as they arise.

Bamboo hard points will be provided. Riggers *must* provide their own safety shears/knife/cutting implement.

                                                                  Prerequisites and Equipment:

Rigger: knowledge of a suspension worthy chest harness, understanding of tension in ties, familiarity with suspension line tie offs, and non-collapsible single column ties. Prior static suspension experience is strongly preferred.

Bottom: clear and thorough communication skills, strong body awareness in rope (particularly in suspension), ability to adjust in rope while suspended, and ability to manage potentially stressful positions while suspended. Previous static suspension experience preferred.

                                                                  Equipment:

Every tying pair will need about 10-12 lengths of rope in good condition (however many you need for suspension, plus a couple more), carabiners, and a cutting implement. An aftercare blanket and/or pillow, as well as snacks, are optional but nice to have.

                                                                  About the Instructors:

                                                                  Shosty9 (he/him)

He is technically minded and always trying to find the pattern behind a friction or harness. An avid educator, Matt delights in sharing with others and investing in the community.

                                                                  BetwixtBlushes (She/Her)

This class focuses on setting the scene for connection and frontloading effort to allow for a smoother and more intimate tie. There will be demonstration and practice time for multiple partial-based predicaments.

You’ll most frequently see them behind the desk, running registration from our nerve center. Nora brings over a decade of experience to the studio, having taught across North America about the intersections of rope, embodiment, neurodiversity, and kink. Their work has been strongly shaped by collaboration with a number of educators, most importantly Ojipan, GoodMostTimes, and Hedwig. Outside of the studio, Nora possesses a deep appreciation for life’s small pleasures. When not guiding transformative workshops or honing their rope skills, they indulge in the art of crafting intricate cocktails and curating exquisite cheese boards. These personal interests underscore their belief that the purpose of life is to find delight in its many forms. Nora is thrilled to offer Devil Mask Studio as a secure and welcoming environment for individuals to explore the ways that a rope practice can unlock pleasure, agency, and self-discovery.

Join us for a deep dive into the physics of body manipulation - an essential skillset for staying in the flow of a scene (and out of the ER). In this workshop we'll explore ways to more fluidly move our partners with rope, with our hands, and with our bodies - even if they’re bigger than we are. Please attend with a partner you are comfortable being in close physical contact with.

She has since continued to expand her knowledge as a switch. She loves to share new techniques from both sides of a tie which led to developing and teaching comprehensive curricula for people honing their skills for tying and being in rope (the Cell and Cell X programs respectively). Fortunate to be based in Los Angeles, CA, she has happily been part of the Devil Mask Society since its inception and is a co-founder of Devil Mask Studio alongside her partners Ojipan and Ordinals. She has an extensive background in event production and organized Ropenspace LA, NARIX 2016, and Kinoko’s Los Angeles Cyber Rope performance as well as innumerable rope intensives.

Colorado's goofiest comedians perform their craft alongside a couple of kinksters doing a suspension. Sometimes the comics roll with it and sometimes the comics get all blushy & bashful. Either way, hilarity ensues!

They were introduced to it as a bottom and found a desire to learn to tie as they began taking classes at Studio Friction. They identify as a queer rope switch. Their tying style leans heavily into sensual, focused, connected rope with interwoven elements of sadism, playfulness, and creativity. They love to teach, perform, learn, and just fuck around and find out! There is so much about rope bondage that they love, and ultimately, they come for the amplified intimacy.

Her journey in Shibari has been transformative, teaching her more about communication, interpersonal relationships, energy exchange and a deep exploration of one's self. Beyond the ropes, Snoh cherishes the connections she forges with her partners and the kink community. She seeks to share her knowledge and passion through workshops and demonstrations, volunteering, and fostering an environment of exploration.
