In this 2-day workshop, aesthetics and play combine to help us explore slow burn and objectification in partials and suspensions. This intensive is taught in the framework of semenawa, focusing on gradual restriction, positional challenges, and improvising visual complexity to evoke feelings of objectification and struggle. We will focus on the unique challenges and benefits of incorporating this kind of struggle or progressive emotional and/or physical challenge for those tied, and how your intentions and aesthetic choices can contribute to the impact of the scene. This workshop is deep dive into intentional, challenging play and is best suited for tying pairs that have worked together consistently and are comfortable exploring play dynamics.

What You’ll Learn:

  • In this workshop, we will focus on suspension-level ties that use gradual constriction and transitions to build up a “slow-burn” suspension experience. We will focus on several elements that increase both the physical and technical challenge of rope, including positional elements (torsion, backbends) and aesthetic elements (undertying, overtying). We will also give special attention to the bottoming aspects of “slow-burn” ties, including communication and scene-building.

What to Expect:

This class is taught at the advanced suspension level. Ties will range from challenging partial predicaments to suspensions with several transition elements. On the first day, we’ll focus on the “slow-burn” element of semenawa, honing in on several shapes that rely on progressive challenge and struggle in order to turn up the intensity. Objectification is the theme of day two, showcasing sequences with larger transitions and improvisational challenges that ask the top to tie to their partner instead of focusing on an end shape.

Things to bring:

  • A full suspension-level rope kit (at least 12 hanks of 7m+ rope, with assorted half and short lengths)
  • At least three full-length ropes that are suitable for uplines. If natural fibers, uplines must be new or show minimal wear
  • Cutting tool
  • Water, note taking tools

Prerequisites:

Tops:

  • Experience building suspendible harnesses for in-person instruction
  • Knowledge of at least two suspendible upper-body harnesses and two lower-body harnesses from memory. Upper-body harnesses must be back-loadable
  • Experience handling multiple uplines in static suspension
  • Confidence in suspension skills and knowledge of safety and risk in rope
  • Knowledge of boundaries around touch, emotions, and movement

Bottoms:

  • Strong body awareness skills, including ability to differentiate between nerve compression and circulation loss
  • Experience in static and dynamic suspensions. This working is not suitable for those without suspension expereince
  • Ability to distinguish between "comfortable" and "sustainable," and a willingness to explore emotional and physical challenge
  • Knowledge of boundaries around touch, emotions, and movement

About the Instructors:

Brooklyn (They/Them)

Brooklyn is a Chicago-based rope switch and educator with experience on both the top and bottom sides of the slash. Their work focuses on the intersection of emotions, technical proficiency, and aesthetics. This curiosity has driven them to seek ongoing formal eduction, studying with a variety of teachers across Europe and the United States, primarily in Naka-inspired semenawa. They aim to offer high-quality instruction on the functional aspects of rope while encouraging students to explore the deeper emotional and psychological motivations behind their practice. Brooklyn believes that fully experiencing rope requires both hard and soft tying skills. Their teaching approach blends technical precision with personal exploration, inspiring students to remain curious and approach rope in a less dogmatic, more individual way. Brooklyn teaches private lessons in their rope space and has taught classes at Sakura Studios in Chicago, including co-organizing and teaching at the Tying Masc Bodies conference in November 2025.

Hatman_Jack (He/Him)

Hatman_Jack fell in love with rope as a means of emotional connection, vulnerability, exposure, pain, and the rediscovering of oneself. After years of flirtation with bondage, he began regularly suspension-bottoming in 2021, and shortly after that he began tying others. When connecting with someone for rope, he strives to prioritize the person through consent and communication. He has demo bottomed for classes at RopeCraft, and SummerCamp, participated in rope-bottoming roundtables in Durham, performed at Kakumei Kan Studio in Finland, and teaches beginner rope through Kink Practice in North Carolina. When not doing rope, he loves exploring nature, growing too many plants, playing board games and ttrpgs, learning languages, cooking elaborate meals, and practicing aerial and ground arts.
