Studio Friction Rope Intensive:

INTRO TO BAMBOO SUSPENSION

w/ Sal and Feral

Price (per tying pair):

BOUND Members $10 | TIED Members $15 | WRAPPED Members $20

Class Description:

In this class, students will learn how to utilize bamboo as a hard point rather than a rigging plate or carabiners. Including how to set your bamboo hard-point, how to lock off on bamboo, safety considerations, differences between single point rigging and bamboo for tops and bottoms, as well as demonstrating and practicing poses to utilize the advantages of bamboo.

We will start with a practical discussion, tie along together to set up our bamboo, then demonstrate a partial suspension as well as a full suspension, then guide students through these poses together (adaptable options will be available). Our goal is to highlight the difference to single point rigging; giving tops an opportunity to get comfortable with the new lock off, experiment with simple transitions, and explore body mechanics on bamboo; and bottoms, the opportunity to explore the comparative sensations to single point, active bottoming in bamboo suspensions, and managing sustainability.

Prerequisites and Equipment:

Tops: Knowledge and experience with static suspensions, a suspendable upper body and lower body harness/ties, non collapsing single column ties (completion of I-1 studio curriculum preferred), experience communicating in suspension

Bottoms: Experience in static suspensions preferred, body awareness in suspension and knowledge of nerve safety, and experience communicating in suspension.

Equipment:

Every tying pair will need a full suspension rope kit (7-12 full length ropes, synthetic uplines), at least two rated carabiners/metal for rigging (limited amount to borrow), and cutting tool. An aftercare blanket and/or pillow, as well as snacks, are optional but nice to have.

**Bamboo will be provided

About the Instructors:

Sal (He/Him)

Sal joined the shibari community in Denver in April 2023 as a rope top, diving deep into online self learning and local classes. Captivated by the intricate and difficult nature of the art, he finds excitement in presenting and capturing the resilience and strength of his partners. His bread and butter is dynamic suspensions, combining sadism, sensuality, and playfulness to create a unique chaotic style. He loves the connection created by challenging his partners through tying, turning a simple pile of rope into an intricate art, with a sadistic twist.

Feral (She/They) (@rope_amine)

Feral is a sadomasochistic switch. They were a casual rope bottom and kinkster for years before deciding to take ties into her own hands in 2023. They completed the Studio Friction curriculum in early 2024 and have been focused on rigging since then.

They are inspired by rope as a means of self-expression, physical embodiment, mental transcendence, and interpersonal connection. They particularly enjoy combining rope with their love of the outdoors as well as flying and rigging dynamic suspensions. Her favorite ties blend playful spontaneity with intentionally curated mental and physical challenges.
